Vikings Athletics Update: Fall Semester Highlights and a Look Ahead

Cross Country Competes out East

After a stellar season, Reggie Williams, Nicholas Taylor, Kunlin Ye, James Saly, and Ewan Schellenberg from the Men’s Cross Country team flew to Windsor, Ontario, for the CCAA Championships at St. Clair College on November 9th. Reggie Williams led the Vikings with a time of 26:31.20, securing 25th place out of 96 competitors.

Before Nationals, Williams earned All-Conference honors, ranking among the top 10 in the ACAC and solidifying his place as one of the top athletes in the league.

Women's Soccer Wraps up

The Women’s Soccer team fought hard throughout the season, with goalkeeper Alex MacDonald standing out. MacDonald tallied 91 saves, ranking fourth in the ACAC and playing a pivotal role in the team’s defense.

Court Sports Heat Up

The Vikings Volleyball and Basketball teams launched their seasons with intense matchups against the Lakeland Rustlers during home openers on October 25th and 26th.

 Women's Volleyball

The Vikings Women’s Volleyball team concluded the first half of their season with a 4-5 record, showcasing standout performances. Brooke McBride and Mikenna Wildeboer, both standout middles, ranked in the ACAC’s top five for blocks per set. Starting libero Racquel Lussier anchored the team defensively, finishing the semester second in the league with 4.08 digs per set and fourth overall with 102 digs.

Men's Volleyball

Starting off the season strong with a huge win against the Briercrest Clippers, the Vikings look to continue their steady growth heading into next semester. All-star Libero Joel Smith has been a standout player in the league. Battling between the top spot for digs in the ACAC, Smith ends his semester with an impressive 2.55 digs per set putting him second in the league. Smith has racked up a total of 79 digs this season ending third in the league.

Women's Basketball

As the semester comes to a close, the Vikings end on a high note with a huge 69-27 victory against the Old College Broncos. The team ended their semester with a 2-8 record.

Captain Mackenzie Mrazik, a former All-Conference athlete, led the charge this semester, averaging 13.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, ranking sixth in the conference for rebounds per game.

Men's Basketball

The Men’s Basketball team closed the semester with back-to-back wins over the Red Deer Kings and Olds College Broncos. 

Jack Smilski, former All-Conference athlete, led the league in rebounds with an impressive 13.7 per game, while Jonathan Gomes heated up offensively, averaging 17.7 points per game and securing fifth place in scoring across the league.

Hockey Season Skates Into Action

The Vikings Hockey team ended their semester with a balanced 6-6 record. 

First-year standout Jack Osmond leads the league in saves with 358, boasting a .913 save percentage over 12 games. Teammate Jacob Biensch also impressed, ranking third in the league with 10 assists.

The future is looking bright for this young team as they head into next semester taking on the Briercrest Clippers on January 17th. 

Nordic Sports Hitting the Slopes

The Nordic team kicked off their season in Canmore for the first Calforex Cup on November 30th- December 1st. Three athletes shone brightly that weekend, Chloe Funnell placed 6th overall in Junior Women and had top shooting results both days. Effie Lockhart competed in Adult 2 and brought home a silver and gold medal. Lastly, Aiden Elaschuk competed in his first races and brought home two gold medals. 

The Vikings Nordic team will be back on the slopes on January 18th for the second Calforex Cup in Canmore.
