Vikings drop close five set battle

CAMROSE, AB - Pushing the game as far as it could go, the Augustana Vikings dropped a close game 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-9) to the visiting Keyano College Huskies, Friday night at Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Huskies take sole possession of second place in the north division with a 7-2 record, while also extending their win streak to seven games. Meanwhile, the Vikings fall short once again and drop their fourth straight match and remain just two points ahead of the Concordia Thunder for last place.

Helping the Huskies secure the win was fourth-year outside hitter Trey Weinmeier, finishing the night with 16 kills, four aces, and three digs. Teammate Preston Yole had an impressive night with a .571 kill percentage to add to the win.

Across the court, the host found success from third-year outside hitter Evan Richard who finished the night with 10 kills and seven digs.

The two squads were evenly matched throughout the five rounds of battle, especially in the first set when both teams found themselves neck and neck with 10 kills, and two errors on 18 attacks.

In the end, however, it was the Huskies who found the upper hand, fighting out of a two-set hole dug by the Vikings to win the final three sets 25-15, 25-22, 15-9.

Both teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at Augustana Gym with the first serve set for 1 PM. Catch all the action on ACACTV!
