The Vikings unveiled two of their recruits last week who should play a major role in their goal of getting back to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championship – Camrose Kodiaks defenceman Joe Tambasco and University of Regina Cougars forward Dillan McCombie.
In Game 3, Sunday back in Camrose, “Skipper” was perfect, stopping all 27 Red Deer shots, including 13 of 13 in the 3rd period when he shut-out the Kings 4-0 to close out the series and send his program to the ACAC semi-finals for the 8th straight year. In all, the Vikings net minder stopped 105 of 108 shots on goal.
The Vikings play the Red Deer College Kings (13-11-1-3) in the first round of the playoffs. Game 1 in Camrose on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Game 2 in Red Deer on Saturday. If Game 3 is needed it will go Sunday at 6 p.m. in Camrose.

What does a student-athlete do when their playing career comes to an end? … This is a hard question that I was forced to ask myself this year as I moved to study Pharmacy at the University of Alberta. That brings me back to my question, I was kept up late many nights over the summer and the beginning of the semester thinking to myself “how am I going to fill this massive gap in my life that hockey used to occupy?”. I was confused with how I was going to use my time and make friends as playing competitive sports was all I knew from an early age. That is when I was given a fantastic opportunity to be a part of something greater than myself.
The international experience was amazing and the organization as a whole adopted us as their own. I can't thank the people of Newcastle enough for the opportunity and I know this was a summer the three of us will never forget. All that remains now is to win a championship for the Augustnana Vikings to complete a perfect year of hockey.
After almost a decade playing hockey in the States — first with the Portland Winterhawks in the WHL and then with various professional teams after being drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2009 — Beaumont native Brett Ponich is excited to be coming back home to Alberta to play for the Augustana Vikings. Spending five years moving due to trades, Ponich said he's lived "basically everywhere you can imagine, from Springfield, MA, to Anchorage, AK, to Chicago. I've been in St. Louis and Columbus," he said, adding that while he's thankful for the opportunities he has had, he's also looking forward to playing hockey in one spot and the stability of school life.
