Making major impacts in their first year of eligibility, Daniel Moody and Chloe Funnell were named the Vikings male and female Rookies of the Year, respectively, Wednesday night at the Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Augustana Campus during the Student Life Awards.

Awarded annually to the most outstanding first-year male and female athletes at the University of Alberta, Augustana, the awards recognize athletes based upon athletic prowess, leadership, character and academic ability.

In his first year in the Red, Black and White, Moody proved to be one of the best goaltenders in the league, making an incredible 441 saves in 14 games played, the second-most saves in the ACAC.

Moody's efforts earned him the starting spot in all five of the Vikings playoff games, including a sweep of the higher-seeded SAIT Trojans in the first round.

Off the ice, Moody has become a leader among his team and in the community.

"Daniel displayed strong leadership qualities and was a great volunteer in the community," said Head Coach Tim Green. "He is an outstanding goalie and had great character on and off the ice."

In her rookie season as a Viking, Chloe was successful on the trail, snow, and track as a multi-sport athlete.

Over the course of the year, Chloe helped the women's cross-country team claim silver at the ACAC Championship and Bronze at the CCAA National Championship, while putting up amazing times in each race.

In addition, as a young competitor, Chloe placed 17th in Canada at the Canadian Biathlon Championships.

"For most, moving away to start university, and getting a job is in itself quite a task. Competing in Biathlon, Cross Country running & Indoor track also makes for a very busy athlete," said Nordic Sports Head Coach Menno Arendz. "It takes extreme dedication to train 7-10 sessions a week, and every single practice Chloe shows up giving it her all. In every practice Chloe is hard at work honing her own skills, consistently pushing herself and her boundaries. I have seen her grow and flourish at Augustana over the past season and look forward to the upcoming years to see what she will accomplish."

Other nominees for Rookie of the Year included Marc Parma (Men's Basketball), Boris Kulijanin (Men's Volleyball) and Kadie Johnston (Women's Soccer).
