50 Vikings are honoured at the first Vikings Athletics Academic Breakfast

Celebrating student-athlete achievements from the 2021-22 academic year, Vikings Athletics hosted its first Vikings Athletics Academic Breakfast on Friday, December 2nd, 2022 to commemorate the hard work and achievements of Vikings student-athletes.

The event welcomed student-athletes who were named recipients of one, or multiple academic awards last year including, Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) Academic Awards, Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association (CCAA) National Scholar Awards, CCAA Academic All-Canadian and Nordic Sports Athletes who achieve First-Class Standing or the Dean's List.

It also welcomed faculty and staff from the University of Alberta - Augustana Faculty who support and contribute to student-athletes success.

Overall, 50 Vikings student-athletes were invited to the breakfast, making up for nearly one-third of student-athletes from the 2021-22 season. Approximately 15 percent of the faculty's student population consists of student-athletes.

Out of all the awards, 45 Vikings student-athletes earned an ACAC Academic Award, 38 earned a CCAA National Scholar award, and 10 earned a CCAA Academic All-Canadian award, plus two dedicated nordic sports athletes achieved First-Class status or Dean List standing at Augustana

Vikings Athletics also honoured the top male and female student-athlete by presenting the Dr. Roger Epp Scholar Athletes of the Year award. Given annually to one male and one female Vikings student-athlete, each of whom maintains the highest GPA while competing as a Vikings athlete. The award represents the combination of the highest GPA with the number of credits completed being considered and individual athletics performance for the year and includes the 2021 winter semester and the 2021 fall semester.

Our male Vikings academic student-athlete from the 2021-22 season, Nathanael Tabert competed on not one, not two, but three varsity sports teams, including cross-country running, indoor track and nordic sports.

In his final year at the University of Alberta - Augustana he was named to the ACAC All-conference Cross-Country Running team and claimed multiple medals for the indoor track team, including bronze in the ACAC Men's 4x200m relay and the men's 600m, plus gold in the men's 4x400m relay.

Competing in her second year of eligibility last season, Jenessa Doctor was not only successful in the classroom but made an impact on the floor for the Vikings Women's Basketball team. Averaging nine and a half minutes played during a return-to-play season in 2021-22, Doctor racked up 32 points and 14 rebounds in 123 minutes played.

This season, Doctor has nearly doubled her stats through the first 10 games of the year, in which she has started in eight. Doctor has 128 points while averaging 12.5 points per game and is currently fourth in the ACAC for 3-point percentage.

This year's breakfast helped wrap up the Fall semester of athletics before the teams return to action in the New Year to achieve new heights.
