Vikings Winter 2024 Catch Up

With the first half of the season done and Vikings teams vying for playoff spots, catch up on how all in-season teams are doing and what remains on the schedule.

Men's Basketball

6th in the North Division

2-8 Conference, 5-13 Overall

Current Streak: Lost 3

Games Remaining: 10

Season leaders:

Points - Ryan Degner - 142

Rebounds - Jack Smilski - 120 (3rd in the ACAC)

3-Point Percentage - Jonathan Gomes 46.2% (4th in the ACAC)

The Lowdown: With only the top five teams in the division qualifying for playoffs, the Vikings will be looking for some second-half magic as they sit four points back of the Concordia Thunder for the fifth and final spot. The two teams will face off on February 2nd and 3rd in a home-and-home weekend series.

Women's Basketball

Points - Mackenzie Mrazik - 151

Rebounds - Tayah Fiveland - 78

3-Point Percentage - Mackenzie Mrazik - 37.7% (3rd in the ACAC)

The Lowdown: Despite a three-way tie-in points for 4th place in the division with the Concordia Thunder and Keyano Huskies, due to tiebreakers the Vikings it in sixth place just outside the fifth and final playoff spot. Having split their seasons series with the Huskies back in October, the Vikings will be looking to upset the Thunder in a home-and-home series on February 2nd and 3rd.

Curling

Men: 0-5 Overall, 6th place

Women: 4-2 Overall, 3rd place

The Lowdown: Starting their season in November at the Fall Regional, hosted by the Lakeland Rustlers, the Vikings Men's Curling team will be hoping for some success on the ice at the Winter Regional, while the women will be looking to build off their success. Each team will need to finish in the top four to qualify for the 2024 ACAC Curling Championships.

Men's Hockey

4th place

5-3-2 Conference, 10-6-2 Overall (W-L-OTL)

Goals Scored - Tanner Manz - 6 (Tied for 3rd in the ACAC)

The Lowdown: With plenty of action left this season, the Vikings will be looking to advance in the standings with the ACAC's new points standing count that was implemented before the start of the season that sees 3 points given for a regulation win, 2 points for an overtime or shootout win and 1-point for an overtime or shootout loss. They currently have 20 points and sit four back of the SAIT Trojans in 3rd place. The top six teams will qualify for playoffs.

The Vikings will play a special international game against Korea University on January 23rd starting at noon at Encana Arena.

Next Game: Home-and-home series with the RDP Kings on January 12th and 13th, with the Vikings playing at home on Friday at 7pm.

Indoor Track

The Vikings Indoor Track team will hit its stride this semester at the Running Room Grand Prix #1, hosted by the Concordia Thunder on January 27th at the Kinsmen Sports Centre in Edmonton. Later on, they will take to the track at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on February 10th in Red Deer before wrapping up their season on March 16 and 17 at the University of Alberta Pavillion in Edmonton for the 2024 ACAC Indoor Track Championships.

Nordic Sports

The Vikings Nordic Sports team will continue their Calforex Cup (Biathlon) and Alberta Cup (Cross Country Skiing) circuit this semester among other races including Ole Uffda Loppet at the Stoney Creek Centre in Camrose.

0-10 Conference, 7-18 Overall

The Lowdown: The Vikings will be on the hunt for their first win of the conference season as they enter the second half of the year in last place in the North Division. However, they sit just points back of the sixth-place Concordia Thunder who are currently on a three-game losing streak. The two teams will face off on February 2nd and 3rd in a home-and-home weekend series.

The Lowdown: After losing their last three games, the Vikings will be looking to get back to their winning ways having started the season with five straight wins. However, they sit comfortably in third place in the north division, with only the top four teams qualifying for the 2024 ACAC Women's Volleyball Championship.
