Curling Coach Recounts Fall Regionals

Men's Team

With all four members of the men's team coming back from a gold medal last year, coach Roger Galenza thinks they'll be in line for a another medal this year.

At Fall Regionals they started against Red Deer College Kings and had control of the game but gave up four points in the seventh end and could not recover from that, eventually losing 7-5. During the second game, the Vikings came out flat and eventually lost 8-2 against Olds. Against NAIT, the team came out with a good game plan and beat the Ooks 5-3.

Game four was the best game of the weekend against the Concordia University Thunder. They all played very well with all players doing their jobs and the Vikings won 6-3. The last game of the weekend was against the Lakeland Rustlers. Unfortunately, three of the flour curlers did not feel well at the start of the game and lost a close game 5-4. They finished with a record of 2-3, which put them tied for third place. For the team to go forward, they will need to play with control, have patience and stay focused and not give up the big end.

Women's Team

The team opened with a good game against Olds and beat the Broncos 10-3.  They played a solid game against Red Deer and had control of most of the game but gave up four points in the sixth end and let the Queens back in the game. They ultimately lost 6-5 in a extra end. Saturday morning they played against the Lakeland Rustlers and had an average game, losing 5-6 in a extra end.

At this point of the weekend the could have been 3-0 instead of 1-2. The next game they played a very strong Concordia Thunder team and unfortunately did not play their best and lost 7-1. Saturday evening saw the Vikings play the NAIT Ooks. The Vikings struggled off the start and ended up losing 9-3. Sunday was the last game for the weekend and the team played the Grant MacEwan Griffins. The team played a very strong three and a half first ends, but again gave up four points at the end of the fifth end. They ultimately went on to lose 7-3. They finished with a record of 1-5 and are in trouble of not making the conference finals in February . For the winter regionals they will need to play well from start to finish every game and not give up the big end.
