Augustana Curlers Take on Competition at Winter Regionals

Women

For the first draw, the Augustana women played Olds. They got off to a very slow start, giving up steal of four in the first end, single points in the second and third ends to begin 6-0 after only three ends. The fourth end they got their game on and grabbed points the next five ends to beat Olds 7-6; a great come back. The second draw had the team playing MacEwan. They played well and had their chances but lost 6-4. The Vikings played against Concordia for the third draw. They, once again, played well but just missed a few shots and lost 10-2.

The fifth draw saw them playing NAIT. The game started off great, with a 4-1 lead after four ends. However, they could not hold the lead and lost 8-5. Draw number six had the team playing Lakeland. The team had control of the game and got a lucky break in the eighth end to beat them 5-4.  The Vikings played against the Red Deer Queens, which meant nothing to Augustana. The girls played a strong, simple game and got four in the eighth end to beat Red Deer 5-3. The Augustana women finished with a record of 3-3 for the winter regionals, an overall record of 4-8 with a final standing of 5th place and a big improvement from the fall regionals.

Men

For the second draw, the team played Olds and the Augustana men had complete control of the game for a win of 5-2. For the third draw, the Vikings played against a strong Concordia team. The Vikings did not play well and lost 9-1. We played NAIT for our fourth draw. Our front end played well but our skip had a off game and we eventually lost 7-1. Draw number six had the Vikings face off against the Red Deer Kings. The team played alright, but could not hold off the Kings and eventually lost 7-3. Our eighth draw was against the Lakeland Rustlers. If they won the game, they would avoid a tie breaker game and everyone played very well to beat them 8-5. The Augustana men finsihed with a record of 2-3 for the winter regionals, overall record of 4-6, and good enough for 4th place. This qualified them to advance to the Conference Finals being held in Camrose Feb 16-18, as well as getting them a birth to the CCAA Nationals in Leduc March 24-28.
