Vikings get off to a hot start against the Wolves

CAMROSE, AB - As the 2021-22 ACAC Men's Basketball season got underway, the Augustana Vikings secured their first win of the season defeating the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves 93-81 Friday night at the Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Wolves continue their hunt for their first win of the season.

Veteran Nathan Bowie led both teams in scoring with 31 points on the night, while third-year Nic Harder added to the scoreboard with 13 points.

Across the court, the Wolves shared the wealth as second-year Abdul Al-tamimi led his team with 18 points with rookies Kwame Okyere and Eric Fehr netting 14 and 10 points, respectively.

In a game that proved to be a back and forth match-up, it was the Vikings who came firing out of the gate going on a 13 to four-run before the Wolves found their stride. Bowie was able to drain 12 points in the first quarter to help the Vikings lead 22-14 at the end of the first.

The second quarter was a battle as the Wolves Okyere and Al-tamimi combined for 10 points, but the Vikings continued to roll, ending the first half with an eleven-point lead, 49-38.

Halftime seemed to be what the Wolves needed, coming out of the break with fresh energy bringing the game to as close as three points and winning the quarter, 21-17. It was still not enough to overcome the lead already built by the Vikings as they entered the final quarter 66-59.

Continuing to push the scoreline and trading points, the Vikings managed to hold off the Wolves to win by 12 points, 93-81.

The Vikings and Wolves will meet again on Sunday night at 6:00 PM MT in Grande Prairie for the second game of the weekend home-and-home series. Catch all the action on ACACTV.
