Vikings are swept by Wolves in weekend series

CAMROSE, Alta. - Getting swept at home by their guests, the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings fall to the NWP Wolves 84-72, Saturday afternoon at Augustana Gym.

The win moves the Wolves up into fourth place in the north to sit a comfortable four points ahead of the fifth-place NAIT Ooks. Meanwhile, the Vikings remain just outside of a playoff spot in sixth place with four points and a 2-7 record.

Leading the way for the Wolves was Emmanuel lloka with 25 points and 21 rebounds for the double-double not from Tim Hortons. Across the court, Ryan Degner led the court with 27 points, while teammate Jack Smilski gathered 14 points.

The game started out on a positive note for the red, black and white as they led the opening quarter 27-18, with Degner draining 10 points. 

It would be a back-and-forth battle heading into the half with the Vikings leading 39-34, evening out at 14 points apiece in the third quarter to keep a 5-point difference and lead for the Vikings.

The game would be flipped on its head as lloka would get 14 points to help the Wolves pull ahead with 36 points in the final 10 minutes to win, 84-73.

The Wolves will have some time to regroup for the second half of the year as they head into the holiday break, meanwhile, the Vikings will lace up their shoes on Friday night as they host St. Mary's Lighting in their last matchup of the 2023 calendar year.
