Vikings' Learn-To-Skate Program A Friendly Invitation to International Students to Get on the Ice

The Augustana Vikings men's hockey team has created a Learn to Skate program for international and other students at Augustana to help them get out on the ice and have some fun!
The Augustana Vikings men's hockey team has created a Learn to Skate program for international and other students at Augustana to help them get out on the ice and have some fun!
The Learn-to-Skate Program is an initiative implemented by the hockey team in order to give international and other students the opportunity to learn to skate. The purpose of the program is dual purpose as it gives students an opportunity to learn a new skill while also giving them a chance to meet members of the hockey team and forge connections with their school team.

The first day of the new program saw only one student show up eager to learn, however, the subsequent sessions have seen an uptick in participation. Roughly 15 students showed up to the second day of Learn-to-Skate and by all accounts, students had a blast getting on the ice and learning.

Those interested in attending Learn-to-Skate can either sign up through the new Augustana IMLeagues site, on the sign up sheets outside of Greg Ryan's office, or at the Augustana Fitness Centre. When attending the program, skaters will be in one of the rink dressing rooms available for public skating and the hockey team will provide helmets and skates for those who don't have their own.

The remaining dates for Learn-to-Skate are Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. at the EnCana Arena.

For those who may have extra skates hanging around, the program is looking for donations of adult skates, sizes 7 and up. Questions about the program or about donations can be sent to: biensch@ualberta.ca.
