Vikings rebound to win over Kings

CAMROSE, AB - Coming back from a loss the night before, the Univerity of Alberta - Augustana Vikings took down the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings 4-3, Saturday night at Encana Arena.

The win draws the Vikings to a 1-1 record after having fallen to the Kings 6-3 less than 24 hours earlier. There is now a four-way tie for second place in the division between the Vikings, Kings, Briercrest College Clippers and the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder.

In a game that saw 58 total penalty minutes between both teams, it was veteran Austin Kozluk who had the last say, scoring the game-winner in the final minutes, while also adding an assist on the game-tying goal from Jake Gudjonson. Rhett Rook backstopped the team making 30 saves on the night.

Across the Ice, forward Hayden Clayton had one goal and one assist, while Kristian Lyon had 17 saves in the loss.

Opening the scoring in the first three minutes of the game was the Kings Chance Longjohn. However, the visitor's lead would not last long as Vikings captain, Owen Lamb found the back of the net just two minutes later. The Vikings would close out the period by adding one more from Colby Wolter to go up 2-1.

It was all Kings in the second as they netted two goals to reclaim the lead they held for such a short time in the first period, thanks to Clayton and Nolan Doell.

Working to earn at least a point over the weekend, the Vikings tied the game up early in the final frame as 2021-22 ACAC All-Conference team forward Gudjonson's shot was on target. But they would stop there, adding a fourth and final goal to take the win, 4-3.

Next weekend both teams will take to the ice with the Kings facing off in a home-and-home series with the SAIT Trojans, while the Vikings will take on the Portage College Voyageurs.
