Overtime winner hurts Vikings

CAMROSE, AB - In a long battle that extended into overtime, the SAIT Trojans got the better of the Vikings, winning 4-3, Friday night at Encana Arena.

With the win, the Trojans remain in second place after nine games played with a 6-3-0-0 record. Meanwhile, the Vikings remain in fourth place in the league with a 4-2-1-0 record. This was the first conference meeting between the two teams since the Vikings knocked the Trojans out in the first round of playoffs last season.

Scoring three minutes into the opening frame, Dylan Williamson put the Trojans up early before silence fell over the game for nearly 20 minutes of play when Zach Cox added an additional tally to the board early in the second to put the visitors up 2-0.

Finding some life midway through the frame, Jack Hamly cut the Trojan's lead in half with his goal only for the Trojan's Tanner Sidaway to get the two-goal gap back to head into the third period, 3-1.

Coming alive in the third, it was all Vikings as Conrad Phillips would add a goal and moments later Jake Gudjonson would tie the game with 11 minutes remaining.

With the next goal wins overtime period looming, both teams exchanged chances going end to end, but it was the two-on-one created by Trojan forward Brandon Machad that would drift down the boards in the Vikings zone, freezing the defence before sending a perfect pass across the ice to the tape of Brett Trenthan for the game-winner.

Holding the score line, Trojans netminder Boston Bilous made 46 saves on the night, while across the ice Rett Rook made 34 saves on the night.

The Vikings will have a shot at redemption tomorrow night when they head to Calgary for a rematch against the Trojans with puck drop at 8:15 PM MT. Catch all the action on ACAC TV.
