Viking pick up an important two points at home

CAMROSE, AB - Rolling to a win, the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings picked up two important points with a 5-1 win over the Portage College Voyageurs, Friday night at Encana Arena.

With the win, the Vikings now have 17 points and sit two points back of the SAIT Trojans for second place in the conference. Meanwhile, the Voygures remain at the bottom of the standings with a 3-12-0-2 record, which saw a 5-4 win over the Trojan last weekend.

Ten different players found the scoresheet for the Vikings on the night, including goal-scorers Jaxon Georget, Jack Hamly, Jase Smalcel, Quinton Sudom, Ben Stollery, while Daniel Moody had 33 saves in the win.

Across the ice, the lone goal came from Shaye Somerfield in the third period and netminder Jacob Gnidziejko made 35 on the night.

A quiet opening period set up an exciting final 40 minutes with Georget opening the scoring early in the second frame, leading to the first of a four-goal run on even strength before Somerfield put a stop to the streak midway through the third period.

However, the guest's goal would prove to be too little, too late, as the Stollery would add the fifth and final goal on the power play for the home side to secure a strong 5-1 victory.

Next up, the two teams will meet again tomorrow night in Lac La Biche for their final matchup of the season with puck drop set for 7:00 pm MST. Catch all the action on ACAC TV.
