The Vikings are swept by the Rustlers

CAMROSE, AB - Getting swept in their weekend series, the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings lost 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23) to the Lakeland College Rustlers, Saturday night at Augustana Gym.

With the loss, the Vikings have now lost 11 straight games and are yet to win this season as they head into the winter break. Meanwhile, the Rustlers improve their record to 5-6 and sit in fourth place in the north.

Leading their team to a win was Mason Short with 16 kills, while teammate Cameron Jones added nine kills and four aces and setter Lane Blight had 37 assists.

Across the court, Ricky Birkill had nine kills, while setter Calder Thompson added 18 assists.

The home side came out strong in the first set cruising to a 25-20 set win to go up 1-0 as they looked for their first win of the season. However, it would be the Rustlers taking all the momentum in the second set as they hit .571 to tie the game at one set apiece.

The momentum would remain with the Rustlers as they would take the third set 25-16 before a battle would ensue for the fourth, but it would still be the Rustlers winning three sets in a row and taking the game.

Looking ahead both teams will wait until the New Year for their next matches as the Vikings will head south to take on the Medicine Hat College Rattlers and the Briercrest Clippers on January 13th and 14th, while the Rustlers will also head south to plat the Ambrose University Lions and the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.
