Vikings claim three medals on Day 2 of ACAC Championships

EDMONTON - With eight races on the schedule for Day 2 of the 2024 ACAC Indoor Track Championships, presented by the Running Room, the Vikings crossed the line to claim three medals Sunday afternoon at the University of Alberta Universiade Pavilion.

Sidney Cusask picked up where she left off after picking up a silver medal on Saturday evening, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:45.55, enough for a bronze medal in the women’s 600m race.

Cusack would not find herself alone in the champion's circle, as Chloe Funnell picked up her first-ever ACAC Indoor Track medal. Funnell’s time of 5:25.42 in the women’s 1500m earned her a bronze medal.

In the final discipline of the day, in the women’s 4x400m relay the Vikings would come in third (4:32.97) for their third medal of the day, Funnel and Cusack would be joined by Jhecelle Borile and Lara Birkill on the podium.

In the rest of the action on the track, the RDP Queens would find themselves getting medals in all eight women’s races over the weekend, for the top spot of the women’s rankings with 95 points, while the Kodiaks placed second with 49.50 points and the St. Mary’s Lighting picked up third place with 45 points.

On the men’s side, the Kodiaks broke four records to succeed in their hunt for the banner with an impressive 101 points. The SAIT Trojans took second with 83 points, while the RDP Kings rounded out the standings with 63 points.

In a race not for the faint of heart, Cadence Laplante picked up the first medal of the day in the women’s 600m with a time of 1:42.79. Following closely behind, Loami Rautenbach from the Queens got silver, while Sidney Cusack from the UofA - Augustana Vikings crossed the line for bronze.

Picking up one of his five gold medals, Owen Stewart took the gold in the men’s 600m, setting a new ACAC Championship record in the race. He would later follow his performance up with a gold in the men’s 1500m.

After individual silver and bronze medals on Day 1, Justine Larson from the Queens would get her first gold medal of the weekend with a time of 5:18.41 in the women’s 1500m. Madison Scrimger would get her third individual medal of the week with a silver, while Vikings Chloe Funnell rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.

In a championship first, a pair of Trojans made history by earning the first gold medals in the 60m race as fellow Faithfulness Oyekan earned the women’s with a time of 8.27 seconds while David Adesegun crossed the finish line in first for the men with a time of 7.04 seconds.

The men’s 4x400m relay would cap off the championships as the Kodiaks set their fourth and final record of the weekend with a time of 3:30.93, breaking the previous record held since 2018 by the Trojans. The RDP Kings took the silver medal with a time of 3:41.82 and the Trojans crossed the line in third place with a time of 3:41.97.
