Vikings surge back to win in final minutes

CAMROSE, AB - Trailing the entire game, the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings come from behind to defeat the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens as time counted down 71-68, Friday night at Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Vikings increase their win streak to three games and secure second place in the south, while the Queens are tied for fourth in the south.

Leading the way for the home side was Tayah Fiveland with 23 points and seven rebounds, while second-year Mackenzie Mrazik added 18 points and 2 rebounds. Across the court, Sandra Garcia-Bernal had 22 points for her side, adding 11 rebounds.

Getting off the bus ready to play, the Queens got out to a quick 7-0 lead before ending the first quarter, 21-13.

Looking to close the eight-point gap before halftime, the Vikings put 18 points on the board, with Mrazik firing seven points through the hoop. However, a slight gap would remain as the Vikings continued to trail, 36-31.

Continuing the trend, the Queens went toe-to-toe with their hosts to keep the five-point gap heading into the final quarter.

With time ticking away, the Vikings found themselves down 56-51 with just ten minutes left on the clock, when Fiveland's layup fell to draw the Vikings to the closest score since the game began, 60-57 with just over five minutes remaining.

Garcia-Bernal shot from behind the arch swished with 2:34 left on the board, but with the Vikings heading back the other way Fiveland drew the foul to have a chance at two, successfully hitting both.

Mirroring the same events, Garcia-Bernal shot from the three missings, while Fiveland drew another foul from Lauren France to once again step up to the line. Making no mistake, Fiveland would drain both to give the Vikings their first lead of the game, 69-69, before Meadow Munroe would add two more foul shots to the board as the Vikings claim the win, 71-68.

Up next, the Vikings will head south to Olds College for an afternoon match-up starting at 1 PM MST, while the Queens will wait to take on The King's University Eagles on November 11th. Catch all the action on ACAC TV.
