Vikings come out on top

CAMROSE, AB - Looking to bounce back from a tough loss the night before, the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings won by 25 points against the SAIT Trojans, 89-64, Saturday night at Augustana Gym.

The win increases the gap between third and fourth place in the north for the Vikings as they improve to 5-3 on the season and are now four points ahead of the Lakeland Rustlers. Meanwhile, the Trojans lose their first of the season and sit in fifth place in the south after five games played.

Second-year student-athlete, Mackenzie Mrazik led her team with 23 points, while also adding nine rebounds and three assists. Teammate Kamryn de Klerk add 18 to the board. Across the court, Kyler Varga led with 21 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Coming out strong on the road, the Trojans found points from all their starters, while Ava Kearl added two and Varga added 7 off the bench to lead the Vikings 22-19 after the opening frame.

However, that lead would not last long, as the Vikings settled in with the home crowd outscoring their guest 27-16 in the second and not only closed the gap, but led by eight points at the half.

It would be a battle in the third as both heads went head-to-head, point-for-point, but the fourth and final quarter would prove to be the difference as the Vikings put 23 points on the board compared to just eight from the visitors.

Looking ahead, the Vikings will have a home-and-home series with the Lakeland Rustlers next weekend to close out the year before the holiday break, while SAIT will have a series against the Ambrose University Lions.
