The Vikings rebound to win

CAMROSE, AB - Effort of the boards made the difference in this one, as the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings claim a 77-64 win over the visiting Lakeland College Rustlers, Friday night at Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Vikings have now won two straight and improved to a 6-3 record and are in third place north, four points back of both Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder and Keyano College Huskies.

Across the court, the Rustlers' 3-6 record has them in fourth place, six points back from the Vikings in the north.

The Vikings found leadership on the court from both Tayah Fiveland and Maren Macdonald, both draining 15 points on the night, while Fiveland also gathered up 14 rebounds. Jenessa Doctor added 14 points of her own. The Vikings also gathered a combined total of 29 rebounds compared to just 19 from the Rustlers.

The Rustlers had three players hit double digits, with Paula Ortiz, Alana Olson and Kayleena Garda scoring 16, 15, and 14 points, respectively, for a total of 45 points for their side.

The first tip-off made up for most of the difference as the home side outscored their visitors 23-16 in the opening quarter. Although the Rustlers were able to draw even in the second frame at 19 points apiece, it was still the Vikings' advantage as they won three out of the four quarters on their way to a win.

Both teams will meet again tomorrow night at Lakeland College for their final game of the semester at 6 PM MT.
