Vikings come up short against division leaders

CAMROSE, AB - In a battle that saw the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings go toe-to-toe against the division-leading Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, the league leaders keep their perfect season alive with a 74-72 win, Friday night at Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Thunder improves to 10-0 on the season giving them the only perfect record still intact in the league. Meanwhile, the Vikings four game win streak came to an end and they remain in fourth place in the north division.

Helping their team to victory on the road was rookie Jenna Rinsky who added 20 points to the board, while teammate Kourtney Oss put up 13 points and gathered eight rebounds.

Across the court, the home side was lead by Tayah Fiveland with 18 points and nine rebounds. Teammates Lauren Cardinal and Kamryn de Klerk both add 15 points each for their squad.

Feeding off the home crowd's energy, the Vikings took advantage of their guests, jumping out to a 21-8 lead early in the opening frame before ending the first with a 10-point, 26-16 lead.

Exchanging points to keep the lead in the second only lasted so long before Madison Murdoch's three-point jump shot passed through the netting to draw the Thunder within one. From there the lead would bounce back and forth, but the Vikings would hang onto the lead, 39-37 at the half.

Keeping it tight in the third, the two teams would exchange points and leads resulting in a game-deciding fourth quarter.

With eight seconds remaining on the board, Oss's successful layup would put the pressure on the Vikings as their guests tools the lead 73-72 before a final foul was committed, sending Oss to the line for two with four seconds on the clock. One successful shot was all she needed to seal the deal.

Looking ahead, the Vikings will head to Edmonton with a shot at redemption as the Thunder host tomorrow night at 6pm MST. Catch all the action on ACACTV.
