Vikings defence proves to be the difference in win over Wolves

CAMROSE, Alta. - Following a nailbiting first quarter, the University of Alberta - Augustana Viking defence made all the difference in their 73-45 win over the NWP Wolves, Friday night at Augustana Gym.

The win gives the Vikings their third win of the season after a tough start to the year for the 2023 ACAC silver medalists who sit in sixth place in the north. Meanwhile, the Wolves sit just behind them in seventh place with a 1-8 record.

Leading the way to victory for the Vikings was Mallory Ogilvie with 15 points and five rebounds, all defensive, with teammate Mackenzie Mrazik always draining 15 points, adding five rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Across the court, the Wolves found monetum from Raylene Badger who had 17 points and three rebounds on the night.

In a close-knit opening frame, the Wolves had the fresh legs to start, leading 17-13 after one. But not to be outdone by their guests, the Vikings found their rhythm in the second quarter and carried through to the third, holding the Wolves to just 12 points and netting 44 of their own. Mrazik was a standout in the second quarter with 12 of her 15 points sinking through the hoop.

Flipping the switch, the Wolves were firing on all cylinders looking for a comeback in the final 10 minutes of action, but it would be too little too late as they fell to the Vikings, 73-45.

Both teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at Augustana Gym starting at 1 PM for game two of their weekend series.
