Lighting strike Vikings

CAMROSE, Alta. - only needing to strike once this season, the St. Mary's Lightening took their chance defeating the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings 83-73, Saturday night at Augustana Gym.

The win brings the Lightening record to 6-5 and ties Lethbridge College in the standings for third in the south. Meanwhile, the Vikings will need a big second half of the season to hold onto the fifth and final playoff spot in the south.

The guests were led by Jazmyn Kellogg coming off the bench to score 32 points on the night, while teammate Andria Stitt got 16 points herself and added six rebounds.

Across the court, the Vikings offence was driven by Mackenzie Mrazik with 21 points as Tayah Fiveland got 14 and nine rebounds.

After a promising start that saw Mrazik sink 10 of her points on the night, the Vikings found themselves up 29-17 after the opening quarter and holding on to that lead heading into the changeroom at halftime, 43-33.

The halftime talk was successful as the Lighting closed the gap in the third and added extra points to take a seven-point lead with only 10 minutes remaining. Four defensive rebounds accompanied by 20 points earned the visitors the win and two points in the standings.

Both teams will take a break from ACAC for the holiday break before returning in the New Year. The Lighting will play host to the Briercrest Clippers on January 12th and 13th, while the Vikings will return to the court on January 13th at Lakeland College.
