Women’s Futsal Championship recap

Women’s Futsal Championship recap

The Women's Futsal team travelled to Lakeland College for the ACAC Futsal Championships this past weekend. Taking home the silver medal last year, there were some high expectations this year. They got off to a bit of a sluggish start tying King's Eagles 1-1 in their only game on Friday. Bailey Wipf was very solid in defense and earned herself the Player of the Game. Tara Berger scoring the lone marker for the Vikings.
Olds Broncos were the first opponents on the Saturday. It was a chance for the Vikings to take control of the group and they didn't disappoint. 3-nil was the final score. Scoring for the Vikings were Alyssa Olstad, Tara Berger and Jenya Rust. Brittany Reed got the shutout and Olstad earned the Player of the game.
The host Lakeland Rustlers were waiting for the Vikings in the last game of the round robin. Win and you're in was the mentality for the Vikings. The Vikings girls were in no mood to be gracious guests and they took it to the Rustlers 6-1. Rust was a beast and had a hat trick with Tara Berger providing the assists. Jenya Rust earned the Player of the Game award.
By winning the group, the Vikings secured a spot in the semi-final the next morning against Lethbridge. The game was very close, with the Vikings having the better of the play at times but came up short. The girls couldn't find the back of the net and lost 1-nil. The game could've gone either way but the team was still disappointed in the end.
They met up with King's again to play for the bronze medal. The Vikings didn't want to come away from the weekend empty handed and defeated the Eagles 2-1. Tara and Jenya worked well again this game to score the goals for the Vikings. The Vikings out chanced the Eagles by a wide margin and the King's keeper was stellar. Not to be out done, the Vikings' own keeper was stellar throughout the weekend. Brittany Reed earned the Player of the Game. Playing keeper for the first time, Reed was phenomenal. It wasn't an easy place to be for the rookie, but she made the best of it.
Veterans and graduating players Cassandra Sanregret, Bailey Wipf, and Tara Berger lead the way for the weekend, and the rest of the team followed.
Tara Berger earned another 1st team all-star over the weekend. It'll go next to the 1st team all-star award she won for the fall outdoor season. Rookie Jessica Lalonde earned a well-deserved 2nd team all-star award.
