Kodiaks inch closer to securing first place with win over Vikings

CAMROSE, AB - In their second to last conference game of the season, the Lethbridge Kodiaks take an 8-0 win over the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings, Friday afternoon at Augustana Field.

The win gets the Kodiaks one step closer to claiming first place in the south division after previously clinching a spot at the 2023 ACAC Women's Soccer Championship earlier this season. The Kodiaks now wait to see where they will finish and if they will receive a bye to the championship semifinal next weekend, based on the SAIT Trojan game on Saturday afternoon against the Medicine Hat Rattlers before the Kodiaks host the Rattles on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Vikings see their season come to a close, finishing sixth in the rankings.

Leading the Kodiaks to victory was Kenley Matishak with a brace and one assist to the top of the afternoon. However, Kyra Piekema and Raeleen Vanden Dungen would also add their own braces to the scoresheet with Nikki Stahl and Kesla Chervenka each adding one. Jordan Quinn had one save in the win.

Leading the league in saves this season, Sofia Ovcharenko added another 14 to her total to have 147 saves through 12 conference season games.

With the playing being primarily on the Kodiak's foot, the hosts held their guest to only three goals in the first half, before the blue and black opened the floodgates with five in the final 45 minutes of play.

The Kodiaks will cap off their regular season run on Sunday when host the Medicine Hat Rattlers. Next weekend, the Kodiaks will head to Edmonton Dome for the 2023 ACAC Soccer Championship from October 26-28 but will have to await their seeding and opponent until the regular season comes to a close.
