Vikings upset Rustlers in five set battle

CAMROSE, AB - Handing their guests their first loss of the season, the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings stun the Lakeland College Rustlers to win 3-2 (25-23, 25-10, 16-25, 11-25, 15-9), Saturday night at Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Vikings not only hand the Rustlers their first loss of the season but also their first set loss of the year. The Vikings sit comfortably in fourth place, six points ahead of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, while the Rustlers still sit atop the standing in the north.

Six players for the Vikings got on the score sheet in the win, but it was Shae Boyes who led the team with 19 kills while Sarah Dedrick had 42 assists. Across the court, Jenay Varga had 15 kills and Jana Laing had 28 assists.

The game led with a shock as the home side took the first set to hand the Rustlers their first set loss in their 11th game of the season, 25-23. The Viking took that momentum and rolled over their guest in the second, 25-10 to go up two sets to none.

Not wanting to lose their 10-game win streak, the Rustlers battled back to take both the third and fourth sets, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

In what was the Viking's most impressive set, the Vikings hit .750 from the line to have nine successful kills and take the set 15-9 and ultimately the game.

Looking ahead both teams will wait until the New Year for their next matches as the Vikings will head south to take on the Medicine Hat College Rattlers and the Briercrest Clippers on January 13th and 14th, while the Rustlers will also head south to plat the Ambrose University Lions and the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.
