Vikings stun the south top team to close out the regular season

CAMROSE, AB - Closing out their season, the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings defeated the Ambrose University Lions 3-1 (25-17, 25-13, 19-25, 25-17), Saturday night at Augustana Gym.

With the final regular season game in the books, both teams will shift their focus to playoffs with the Lions advancing straight to the ACAC Championship thanks to their first place standing in the south division.

Meanwhile, the Viking's fourth-place seat will see them have to win one more match to qualify for the championship after winning their last four straight matches all on home court.

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first, only to see the Lions crawl their way back in protest. However, that comeback in the opening set fell short with the Vikings taking the set 25-17.

Carrying their momentum well into the second set, the Vikings took a quick 13-2 lead before taking the set, 25-13 and leading 2-0.

Not having the same amount of explosive success, the home side found themselves going point for point with the Lions in the third. With a score of 10-9 the Lions gave themselves their first lead of the match and from that moment on it would be the Lions set, 25-19 to force a fourth and possibly draw even in the frame.

Not wanting the souths top team to have any more breathing room, the Vikings took a 19-10 lead in the fourth set and ran with it to win the set, 25-17 and the game, 3-1.

The Lions will get a week's rest before heading to Red Deer for the ACAC Championship starting on February 22, while the Vikings will take on the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder next weekend at home.
